TA Free-wheeling???

I've been shopping for a utility tractor to use in the mountains of West Virginia. One dealer I spoke to about an IH 354 said I shouldn't consider an IH with a TA because of a "free-wheeling" condition that can occur in the hills. When I asked him to explain it, he didn't.

Do any of you know of such a thing? Does a TA pose an actual risk in the mountains, or was this smoke (the 354 had no TA)???

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Bob,

I have been using a 340 with TA for quite a while in the hills of SouthEast Mo. I have had really good luck with it. It provides the extra boost when you need it. Just pull back when you need it then forward as soon as you done. It will free-wheel going down hill while the TA is engaged. But not when the lever is forward. The only time I have ever used it was plowing. So for utilily work I would have no problems using one in the mountains. Just remember-- Like all things you do on tractors-- Pay attention and Be careful-- You'll be fine.

Good Luck in your search...

Yes Bob it will freewheel when engaged. The TA is a Torque Amplifier, ie., intended to be used when you need extra power (pulling, etc). If the TA is not engaged then you will have the engine breaking you would expect. When the TA is not engaged, it is in direct drive. That is, power is transferred to the rear wheels as if there was no TA at all.

I believe the 06 series was the first that didn't freewheel when the TA was engaged.

Yes, the T/A will freewheel, so it should not be engaged when going downhill, as you will not have the braking action of the engine. At least this is true on the 300 and 400 T/A.
