I am talking to a man long-distance about an IH 340 utility tractor. However, he has only owned it a couple of weeks and is not overly familiar with its specs --- and I am not familiar with this model at all.

Can someone give me a basic description of the basics --- horsepower, gearing, weak points, etc.

I understand it has a 4 cylinder gas engine with PS, TA, independent PTO, quick hitch and dual hydraulic front-end loader.

I'm told the front end loader (with a heavy 6' bucket) is "slow" on the uptake. Does this indicate a hydraulic problem, or just typical for this model? What might it cost to get that pump rebuilt if need be?

Also, what should I expect to pay for a quick hitch to 3-point conversion kit?

Thanks very much.

Bob

Bob,

The 340 has roughly 35hp on the PTO and 32hp on the drawbar. It has five forward gears along with the T/A. I have found it to be a very usful tractor. I have no idea what a rebuild would cost on the hydro pump. The conversion to the 3-point should not be much because it just slides into the quick hitch.
I do know the T/A can get costly if there are problems.

The biggest problems I know if is for the draft control, and only if it is an early model. The later models had a mechanical draft control verus the cable control on the early models.

Overall for general work the 340 is a good tractor.

Hope this helps,
SEMO

Bob while you are waiting for some responses, under the research bar on the left, select more. Then select site search. Down on that page select Farmall and then go to page 13 and 14. You will find several archived threads on the IH 340 utility.

TR: Thanks much for the tip. I've been looking at this site for months, but never realized that huge data base was sitting there! Lots of good stuff.
