Our 560D has a surging problem where the engine will rev up on it's own.If you slow the throttle back down it runs rough for a while then smoothes out.If you let it rev it will slow it's self down after about 30 seconds.I checked the return line from the pump back to the tank and it is clear. The local IH dealer says it may be a govenor problem. What would be involved to fix this and the approx. cost? Other than the surge problem this tractor runs fine. Thanks.

THIS TRACTOR SHOULD HAVE A ROOSAMASTER INJECTER PUMP ON IT THESE PUMPS ARE FAIRLY SIMPLE TO WORK ON. I HAVE FIXED THIS PROBLEM BY ADJUSTING THE SCREW WITH A JAM NUT ON IT LOCATED ON THE TOP OF THE PUMP. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK IT SOUNDS LIKE THE GOVERNER IS BAD. IF A PERSON HAS DESCENT MACHANICAL ABILITY AND IS VERY CAREFUL YOU CAN CHANGE THE GORVERNER FOR ABOUT 80 DOLLARS.

Hello,
You may be experiencing something similar to what I did with my 560 D when I bought it. It would act like you're talking about, but also wouldn't really run smoothly at high rpm. After describing the symptoms to at least three dealers, I called a small repair shop that focused on IH tractors in Centralia, Kansas. It is called Elmer's Repair Shop. The kind gentleman I spoke with said that I should start the motor and get it warmed up. Then, on the back side of the injector pump (opposite from radiator side) and on the side closest to the cylinder block, there is a small adjustment screw. It is held snug with I believe a 7/16 lock nut. With the engine started and running then you loosen the lock nut and screw the adjustment screw in or out until it smooths out. He was absolutely correct. The tractor idled smoothly thereafter, had no surging and also runs just as smoothly at high rpm.
This may not cure your 560's problem, but its worth a try before encountering more expensive repairs.
As a side note, I've also heard of IH owners talking about installing a heavier spring on the governor----- I'm not familiar enough to know what this entails, but someone else may be able to advise you on this, if the screw adjustment doesn't clear it up.

I ve had this problem with jd. the governor is in need of repair you will probably need to take the pump in to a shop.if the shop will just fix governor, about 300 or exchange pump,700.00
