I picked up this 154 for a song. I plan to use it for mowing about six acre yard. My M and my 424 are for the fields. The 154 runs good and the five foot Woods mower is in great shape. Now the problem CHARGING THE BATTERY I'am getting 12.15 volts across the battery, but it is draining down. Off the two leads from the generator I get 7.5 volts. When I take a read off the center and left wires on the regulator, I get 11 volts or so. Off the center and right leads, I get 7.5. Is this a case of the generator not charging properly and the reading on the left of the regulator caused by the battery draining down. I know I'am lost when it comes to the electric system. Help?

I solved my 154 problems by shit canning the starter/generator and converting to a 184 starter&alternator.You will need:184 ring gear(IHC $50.00),184 reman.starter(central tractor $110.00),GM63amp reman.alt(Auto Zone $30.00,for 77chev.p.u.),184 alt.resistor(IHC $5.00),also should replace ammeter with volt meter.Fabricate alt. bracket or try Wenger`s for a used one pt#131229C1 & 184 V-belt from IHC $18.00.Ring gear just sweats onto flywheel,revise your wiring using service manual or 184 owners man.(both avail.from IHC & others it`s worth the effort & $$$..... ...MIKE

Mike,

Your the guy I've been looking for. I've got a 154 with the starter/generator and have been wanting to know about changing to a conviential starter and a alternator. Your explaination in converting seems pretty straight forward. Are you still satisfied with the conversion? Apparently the 184s are set up this way. Did you have to alter anything else or does the starter just bolt up? Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Burlon

Is your generator a combination stater/generator or is it a regular generator? If it is a single purpose generator only, I would convert to an alternator. It will maintain the battery better than a generator and will normally recharge the battery quickly following cranking. Once the output drops off, the load to the engine is lessened. Trust me, a Cub engine needs all the relief it can get. An additional assistance to getting the maximum power yield from the underpowered engine is to check the level of the mower deck. The optimum situation is to lower the mower deck to the desired cutting height and then place a carpenter's level oriented front to back on the deck and the bubble should be about half a bubble off level with the front of the deck being the lower part. Conditions of level or the front being higher than the rear results in the blades having to do greater work due to recutting what the leading edge already cut. On some decks, the existing adjustments will not permit the deck being angled as described without modification. It is worthwhile to make the correction even if you have to get the work done by a shop. I had discontinued using my Cub until I came by this remedy. Best of luck.
