Brian usually you keep the high charge on high. I have only seen one 6 volt generator charge at around 20 amps and so I dropped it to low charge to bring it down to 10 or so. Otherwise that low is not needed.

After you got the beast running, unhook the battery cable, at the battery, that goes to the starter switch. If she stays running, you are charging.

the pulling the ground while its running gives you a rough idea if it's charging but no idea if it's right alos what about mine having a magneto it should run without a battery

If you have a voltmeter, hook on lead to each battery post. With the motor at full RPM you should see 7 to 7.25 volts if the generator is working right. Less than that says you've got a problem.

If you don't have a voltmeter, you can get a decent pocket digital multimeter $25 or so at Radio Shack - well worth the expense for diagnosing tractor electrical problems!

Forget who has what. You are correct. It should stay running with the mag.

Welllll , if you have lights, they should stay illuminated with the cable off if she is charging.

If you don't have lights, then you will need some sort of meter to test.
