2 Types of Front Rims for H

This is my first attempt in restoring a tractor and have a few questions. I noticed in my parts book that IH made 2 different styles of front rims for the H. One is called an adjustable front rim which has what would be the clamps welded/rivetted into the rim itself. I have seen this style on a '45 and also a '46. Then, the other type has the individual cast clamps that hold the rim and wheel itself together. I have seen this type on some smaller tractors (A and B) at shows and also on a '44 H. Were either of these types available as an option at any time during the manufacturing of the tractors or was there a serial number break from the factory? I am curious and somewhat confused because I don't see anything in my parts book that splits the options up. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info. I guess there really isn't such a thing as a nice clean serial break for the rims. Once again, thanks.

Adding to the confusion: There are two types of adjustable tread front rims, 3-rivet lug (early) and 4-rivet lug (late). Not certain the date when the change was made but I'd guess about 1951 (Guy Fay???).

BTW the 3- and 4-rivet adjustable rims are interchangable; my '53 Super H had one of each when I got it as did a neighbor's '49 H. Recent photos of The Red's '51 H shows one of each style too.

And of course there is another option that my H had when I bought it, as best I could tell it was a "farmer special", clamp type rim with homemade lugs welded on.

They were both 3 bolt Bob.

You had your choice when you purchased your tractor. My 1945 Indy H has the adjustables and the 1946 Old Red H has the clamps. The clamp type makes it easy to remove the rim but they are a pain to get tight against the rim.

The type with the cast clamps were the standard front wheel type. The adjustable front wheel type was optional most, if not all, years of the H production.
