maybe i am crazy can't any one get a generator fixed
it been my experance that most of the problems with 6v system is to small of battery cables or those quick fix end you can buy. it also devalues your tractor if you are wanting to restore it thats my 2 cents ben.

I'll offer my 2 cents once again and suggest that you go to TSC or NAPA and get an 8 volt battery. It fits in the same space as the 6 volt, will solve the starting problems and no rewiring is required. I set my third bursh (on a "C") to the farthest out position and it charges the battery just fine. The battery was about 40 bucks.

I agree with you about the value except for one fact, some people accually want a coversion done before they get it.The biggest reason I changed over is because here in SC you cant get 6 volt batteries! That is unless you waita couple of weeks on it to get here and have an extra 200 bucks in your pocket!Had my generator rewound and bought a 12 volt battery plus a resistor and new bulbs for 125 bucks!

Amazingly I can go west of Indy 7 miles to Thrifty Farm Store (mandatory to pet the kitty cat while inside) and they keep a whole line of 6 volt batteries. They ain't cheap. I converted my first two Hs 10 years ago and more than recouped the cost of the initial conversion.

6 volt batteries are about 30 bucks Tractor Supply Co. here is east central Illinois. Many other places stock several, but I don't suppose Auto Zone or the likes do. I am fortunate to be a farmer in a farm based area. Lot of 6 volts still used on the old stuff here.

I didn't have much of a problem finding a new 6v battery here in western WV. Two major chain auto parts stores carried them. Western Auto had it cheap($37), but it was only 535 amps. Auto Value had it expensive($70+!), and it was 735 amps. A local place deals in all sorts of batteries, including specialized batteries for industry, and they stocked a 6v rated at 835 amps for $50. I took 'em up on it.

The tough thing to find for me was a fully automatic charger, reasonably priced, that automatically charged 6v batteries! I found a Schumacher for $65. The cheapest Sears had was close to $80, and all the others either didn't carry it or wanted over $100.

Well its not that we cant get em,we can.But 99.9% of any knd of store dont have them.It is a real shame really.Alot ofthe part stores around have been put out of business by the big chains. We use to have a guyt just a few miles from here that not only carried car parts but a lot of different tractor parts as well as parts for equipment.Autozone moved in and within a year he was out of business.

a big plus is you have the ability to power trailer lights with out a problem. and your tractor is also a mobil jump starter for any number of items. by the way besides the ballgames you can listen to christmas carols at exceptional volumes when pulling the hay wagon and imbibing adult beverages during the appropiate season...

Rob knows how to utilize his tractor to the fullest extent. And to think of all those long nites pulling a plow in a quarter section. I must go to town more often.

Make sure to wear your tractor seatbelt in Indy. They are cracking down.

My main reason is econonics,by the time you buy a regulator and have a generator rewound, you still have a 30 year old system. It is hard to conviently find someone that can diag and repair gen systems, Alot of times it will be wiring probems. With a alt, there is less wiring, will keep the battery up easier, and you can go to super wallmart and get parts. If you just put a 12v battery in and disconnect the gen, install a resistor, you can run it for a couple of weeks, months w/o charging. I don't have the extra money to keep my tractors in the purest state, mine are working tractors, but they sure are fun are'nt they??? I went to a friends today, converted his 100 to 12v, fabed the brackets, wired it,changed the battery etc, was done in 4 hrs, it cost $190, and I put $50 in my pocket, and it looks good enough that I can say I did it, havent done a gen in awhile can it be done with a new battery for that price?

Right about the economics! A new regulator for my stock 6 volt Super H cost nearly as much a the entire cost of converting my Super M to 12 volts. And the 12 volt tractor leaps to life instantly - even after sitting idle for several months.

On the other hand there is some sort of strangely satisfactying when the 6 volt tractor strains to make 3 or 4 halting half-revolutions of the motor, then suddenly comes to life. I like 'em both ways...

I like em both ways too. My rule of thumb is in they have a distrubutor I go 12V, magnetos I'llleave 6V those old IH mags throw a really hot spark at low speed( I like the old hand winders the best).

Tractor parts may be cheap in Iowa but agricultural commodity prices are cheaper.

My H is still 6 volt. I just purchased all new orignal cables (the heavy duty 2 gauge kind), a new starter switch and have a two year old battery. Even though the battery tests at about 75% the tractor starts on the first crank. I must admit my lights are not hooked up yet and I have not had to jump start it and I can't receive a station very well where I am working. But overall, I am happy with the six volt.

Well, for the purist, I suppose 6v generator system is better because it was original. For the rest of us, the 12V system cranks faster, the lights are brighter, it's less of a hassle if you need to jump start the tractor or jump start using the tractor, and you can add accessories like a radio to hear your favorite ball team lose in the 9th.

Big Fred - good reasons! Here's one more: You need fewer batteries. I haven't yet figured out how to use both my boat and my Super M (12 volt converted) at the same time. So I have one battery I share between the two. (This also makes it more difficult for some scumbag to steal one while I'm off playing with the other...)
