Anyone know what would cause a Farmall 1950 M to stop moving while going up the road in fifth gear? As a matter of fact non of the gears work. They all feel like nuetral. No prior warning, no noise, no jerking around etc. It does have an M&W clutch on it with the handle gone for some time by the looks of it. I have left it alone since I got the tractor because I haven't had a gear problem. Thanks for any help. I do have all the manuals for this M. Thanks Again, Bart in Vt.

easy fix; take the cover off the side plate on the M & W clutch, two 5/16 cap screws. There is a large nut on the end of the shaft, about 1" 1/4 dia.Give it about a 1/4 - 1/2 turn. Put your plate back on before you drive it. that should solve your problem

Hey Big Diesel, That quick fix didn't work. I turned the nut clockwise as you look straight at it. Wrong way? Next step is to drop the lift-all and check the clutch, like I know what I'm looking for, Duh!! Thanks again. Bart in Vt.

Hey Big Diesel, That easy fix didn't work. I turned the nut clockwise as you look straight at it. Wrong way? I suspect there is some linkage problem on the clutch side. The PTO does work ok. So does the hydraulics from lift all. Next step is to drop the lift-all and check the clutch, like I know what I'm looking for, Duh. Thanks again, Bart in Vt.

hey bart, maybe you have to tighten the nut a little bit more, and make sure the cover is put on right with that peg in the slot. also, did your handle go into neutral, make sure it's forward into the lock up position. if you have hyudraulics and pto the problem is in the M & W clutch. most problems i have ever seen, they need the nut tightened. by tightening the nut, you put more pressure on the clutch plates. let me know how you make out. big d

The M&W could do that, if engaged somehow (it's an over the center style, so without the handle that should be difficult); or if the clutch discs had all their teeth chewed off. The M hand clutch has either 3 or 4 of the fibre discs that are donuts with teeth around the outside edge, and if they get chewed off, you aren't going anywhere.

Another possibility could be the half moon key on the transmission input shaft. The way to check this is put the trans in gear(any gear) and also put the PTO in gear. If the PTO doesn't turn the problem is toward the front of the transmission, or maybe the rivits in the clutch hub are sheared off.

Good point, Les.
If the PTO (and the belly pump hyd system) doesn't work either, then that would tend to point you closer to the front of the trany or the main clutch. If both of these do work, that would point you back toward the M&W clutch.

third party image

The M&W clutch mounts over the left hand brake and interupts power to the wheels while PTO power remains active. I need one for a H.
