6 Volt Regulator L post

Help please!
I'm re-wiring my 45 A with starting and lighting and have replaced the generator and volatage regulator.
When I purchased the tractor it had a non-standard set-up (solonoid and starter button) so I've started from scratch.
The new regulator has a "L" as well as the standard posts for a total of 4.
Is there any time I would need the "L" for anything?
I can't find any mention of the "L" in any of the manuals, but was told to run the field wire from the ammeter to it then run a wire from the "F" regulator post to the "F" on the generator.
Also, is there a way to test the ammeter itself for proper operation? Thanks for everything I've already learned here.

Barry -

This diagram (6 volt, 4-terminal regulator with solenoid in the starter circuit) may be of help. It's for a Super H, but your A will be wired up the same - except possibly for the terminal numbers on the light switch.

Not sure what the "L" signifies on the regulator. I guess it is for LOAD, since that's where the ignition and lighting load connections are made.

To test the ammeter, temporarily wire it in series with a battery and a single headlamp bulb. If the ammeter's working it will indicate the current drawn by the headlamp (3 or 4 amps generally).

Good luck!

Dear Bob,
First of all thanks for the great diagram.
Too bad you didn't do the ones in the IH manuals!
Given that I've gone back to the original setup ie: starting push rod switch on the starter motor, magneto and no starter button, would I still use the "L" terminal. Is that just for solenoid-starter button set-ups?
The only reason I'm asking is that in my manual it shows one wire in the harness going to the "F" terminal on the generator, one wire going to the "B" on the regulator and a jumper wire from the "G" on the regulator to the "A" post on the generator.
Was there a change in regulators or generators since 45?
Thanks for the tip on the ammeter test.

Barry - On your setup you'd use the "L" terminal only to feed the light switch, if your tractor has lights. (So if your your tractor is without lights nothing gets hooked onto "L"...)

There was a change from a simple generator cutout to a voltage regulator I think about 1952. (The generators however remained unchanged.) Quick way to tell: Look at the light switch. If it has 4-positions (L-H-D-B) it's the earlier, cutout-equipped system. The newer regulator-equipped tractors have a 3-position (O-D-B) light switch.

PS - Thanks for the compliment on my sketch! I saw the one in my IH manual and figured it wouldn't be too hard to improve...

Bob, that is a great sketch. Can you tell me if that same sketch would be the same for my 42 M? Its a keeper if it will. Thanks

If your 42M has the voltage regulator on top of the generator, it will look like below.

Willie if you are still 6 volt, the bat terminal on the voltage regulator will probably be on one side and the field and generator posts on the other. It varies between manufacturers.

On the regulator I got from Country General the "L" signified lights. Ran the wire from the "L" terminal to the lights terminal on the switch. My switch is a four position, low charge, high charge, bright lights, dim lights.
