Just bought a 1954 Super H serial number 26160 with a J suffix...couple of questions...

1. What is the J suffix...I don't see it in any of my books.

2. It has a wide front end on it. I don't know if it is original or not (I know there were several companies that offered aftermarket units). I gave it a quick inspection and did not notice any tags or casting codes that would indicate either an aftermarket or original unit. The one thing I noticed was that the steering gear was on the back of the axle as opposed to the front as in some pictures I have seen of regular Hs with wide fronts. Can anyone give me clues about how to determine the originality of the unit.

3. Any Super H owner...can you comment on parts availability...I can get almost anything for my Cub...but there were so few Super Hs made I am concerned. The parts that I know I need right now I have located.

4. It has the stage II hydraulics....what all can you do with the hydraulics? It has an aftermarket 3pt hitch with only 1 ram.

Bama - responses to your questions in order:

1 - "J" suffix says your tractor's equipped with a Rockford clutch.

2 - From your description it sounds like you've got an original wide front. My father in law has a '53 with OEM wide front - if I can locate a photo I'll post it so you can compare.

3 - Super H parts are readily available. Many parts are identical to the non-supers. My experience has been parts unique to the Supers (brake parts, oil filters, pistons/sleeves, etc.) are easy to find.

4 - Stage II hydraulics are "live" - much preferred over the Stage I non-live (belly pump) system.

Enjoy your Super H - it's a fine piece of machinery! (I own a '53 Stage 1 narrow front...)

Bama - Did not find a photo of the Super H wide front. However here is a '53 Super M with factory WF. My recollection is the Super H is identical except a bit smaller.

Hope this helps...
