I came across what is advertised as a '57 400 gas, went to look at it and I think it might be a '58 450 gas (white grill). Anyway the price seems reasonable, but I really can't use a narrow front. What are my WFE conversion options? Can I use a WFE from a M/MD/SMD/help? Also, what identifiers (other than grill color, which can easily be changed) would tell me whether it is a 400 or 450?

450 - Splined steering wheel with a 3" medalion that looks like a horn button.
400 - single lever rock shaft on fast hitch
450 - dual level rock shaft on fast hitch
450 - white decal (rather than paint)on hood panels if paint is original

Thanks! I recall the rockshaft, it's gotta be a '56 400 from that. I'll go back and check out the steering wheel sometime this week. Paint is too red to be original (not enough rust) but too bad to be a factory job (runs and drips).
