I just bought a IH484 diesel. I understand that it is a three cyl. 40hp engine, but I don't know much else. Info as to the age, problems, and tips to cure them would be great. I really couldn't find any info as to value before I bought, maybe I'm no longer a virgin!

pto h.p. is 42.42, cu.in. is 179, made 1978-1984. Value depends on condition and location.

The tractor seems to be in petty good shape. It has a new woods brand front loader. The only thing that I can find wrong is sometimes its difficult shifting from high to low or to reverse. As to what you mean by location I'm confused. If you mean a high farming area or a large demand for farm equipment, then I would say its a medium farming area. I really hate to say this but its my first tractor, so I'm as green as green can get. HElP----- P.S. thanks for the info

Most of the newer IH tractors had less than perfect shifting linkages. As you spend more time on your 484, you will be able shift the transmission with minimal effort. In regard to location, values of tractors vary with location, demand and availability. In row crop farming areas, smaller tractors are less prevelant and will command a higher price. As The Red says, in Farmall-infested Indiana, price are relatively low for Farmalls. In California, the same conditions exist for old Farmalls in the San Joaquin valley, and bargins abound for the old row-crop Farmalls. Under 100 HP tractors are very prevelent in our permanent-crop areas, so smaller tractor prices are reasonable. Sounds like you purchased a very useful piece of equipment. Good luck.
