Cub overhaul of one cylinder?

Has anyone overhauled just one cylinder of a tractor? I have one cylinder that keeps fouling the plug. Once the plug quits the tractor quits smoking. This tells me that that particular cylinder needs work of some sort. I am thinking that there are one or more cracked rings. I think it is the #1 cylinder. Would YOU only do one cylinder? (a budget is a issue!)

I've done this several times, pull the plugs, find the fouled one, pull the pan and head, use a putty knife to remove the head, the gasket is a sandwich type gasket[ 3 pieces] pull the piston, the rings will probally be stuck to the piston,[ you should be able to look at the cylinder and see where the rings are collapsed by the wear on the cyl] ,go to a real auto\ truck supply, get a set of rings for 1 cyl, a tube of RTV sealer[ red or black] and a can of wheel bearing grease.. Remove the rings, break one of the old rings use it to remove all the carbon in the piston[ scrape till u see aluminum.. Stagger the ring gaps oil and install,, If the rod bearing is down to brass, I would replace all the rod brngs [4] with .003 oversize bearings.. Remove the lower plate of the oil pump, sand it on a flat surface and put a 1\4" nut in the bypass spring to add a little pump pressure.. I expect to hear some flack on this repair, but have been broke before but I was still riding. I did this on a 58 ford pu and drove it for 3 yrs. How about it ITF, got any thing to add??

Forgot about the head gasket., coat both sides with the grease, do not scrape the head or block, retorqe to specs with a grunt, run 2-3 hrs retorque....

I would put in the hotest spark plug. I did that in my Cub, the ring were shot. I used Champion D18Y. With a hotter plug you won't foul plugs.

Brian;

Good Question. You should post this to the Cub Forum for more responses. I'm curious to!

Good Luck

If you want a temporary quick fix on a low budget. I would pull the head and pan and put in a new set of rings. If you know anyone with micrometers have them see if it is within spec or not. Most people would not recomend this type of repair but sometimes it is necessary and there are many tractors out there that still run that the old timers did this to. I say give it a shot, in your case it can't hurt since I just did a rebuild of my cub and it cost over a $1,000 with very low machining costs, friend's shop and all. I have another cub that I will be doing this to this fall.....

I should clarify.....I would replace all the rings. To overbore or repair only one cylinder is foolish. Not only is it a waste of time(since your there it is not that much more expensive) but it throws the balance of the motor off.

This is an acceptable solution and should extend the life of the tractor for quite some time if it is not used in an extensive farming/nursery operation. I suggest that the engine be torn down to do an inframe overhaul and then start posting you findings or questions. Members of this forum will assist in overcoming any problems you encounter. If you elect to do this, prior to the teardown you will need to do some fact finding. Buy a cheap compresssion gauge and test each cylinder, then pump a few shots of oil in each cylinder and repeat the compression test. What is the oil pressure at idle when the tractor is at its hottest? Record all findings. Let us know you decision.

I`m inclined to go with itf`s thoughts on this.Considering your time & the price of gaskets you would be foolish to not,at the very least hone & re-ring all the holes. If you just want to stop fouling plugs,you can use non-detergent oil,ND oil will burn along with the fuel without fouling.....Mike
