Hi there,

Any thoughts on the pro's and con's of "loading" the tires (with calcium I think it is?) Is it expensive? Can it be done at my place or do I need to move the tractor? I guess the idea is to add weight. Are there other advantages? Does it make the tires more "flat resistant?" What are the disadvantages? I have a 584.

Thanks to all!

If you need weight for traction it is the easiest and cheapest way to get it.I fill my own tires. The adaptor that goes on the valve stem hooks to a garden hose.I use a small submercsable pump and a garbage can. You can bye the adaptor at a farm store for about $12.00 Good Luck

Ok now nobody laugh but recently weve been filling the tires in our old tractors with windshield washer fluid. It can be bought in bulk 55 gal. drums,it doesnt freeze, and its not corrosive.Locally we get it for about .85cents per gallon, its cheap. The last one we did was a oliver 88 standard about 3 years ago its worked great, try it.

Actually they use calcium chloride, a type of salt, and thus the corrosive effect on rims.

Only eats the rims because you let it touch them! Use new tubes, and if you get a leak, wash the rim with dish soap and water. You won't have rotted rims that way. Robert

I agree with Redfan, also fluid will not make tires flat resistant. If you need the weight it can be done at your place by your local ag tire repair shop.

We quit putting fluid in our tires because it rusted out the rims all the time. Steel Wheel weights are better in my opinion.

You'll get plenty of answers for and against. When I first started farming the trend was to widen the rims, fill the tyres with water and stack on the weights. Chewed up gearboxs' like crazy. Personally on all our farm tractors we like to put duals on and leave the water out, better floatation and enough grip.Regards, Redfan.
