Carb trouble on Farmall M?

The tractor had been starting and running fine while using it on a grain auger occasionally. The other day when we tried to start it, gas was running out of the botttom of the carb bowl while we were cranking it. Assuming the float was stuck we had the carb boiled out and a new kit installed. The float was checked and it was ok. When we reinstalled and tried to start it, the same thing happened. It only pours gas out when the engine is cranking and not when it is sitting. Any ideas about what the problem might be? Thanks!

The M and H carbs do not have an air flapper valve in the choke butterfly. The correct starting procedure is full choke for one or two revolutions and half or three quarter choke until it starts. If you leave the choke on full too long, raw gasoline will be drawn into the carburetor throat and will run out the drain hole. Consequently, it is very easy to flood these tractors when starting. The Super series remedied this problem by incorporating an air bleed flapper in the choke.

Although you have checked the float and it appeared to operate properly, the only way that gas can run out the bottom of the carb is by a stuck float, float level adjusted too high or an improperly seated float needle assembly. The float level may be adjusted too high and the vibration of cranking the engine will allow the float bowel to overfill. Adjust the float to shut off gas when the float is level with the bottom of top part of the carb.
