Governor problems?

Just finished working on the Super H, and I tried to fire her up. Wouldn't start at first, then she fired up and the engine immediately started racing waaay TOOO fast. Tried again, with the same result. Pulled off the governor housing plate and didn't see a broken spring. I did pull the carb off while working on her, but I did not pull the carb apart. Any suggestions? Incidently, it has a M&W ADD POW'R GOVERNOR.

If it was running OK before you pulled the carburetor, I would suspect the same as Jim mentioned about the slot in the carburetor butterfly assembly. When I install a carburetor back on an H or M, the first thing I do is connect the carburetor to the governor shaft and make sure I have the two connected correctly. I then move the throttle lever up and down and confirm the butterfly is working correctly. Then I raise and connect the carburetor and gasket to the manifold.

Jim and The Red, thanks for the comments. Probably was the problem; I took the carb off and put it back on carefully making sure all the connections were correct. After a while, she fired up and ran rather well except for some smoke at idle speed. Rev the engine up and the smoke is gone. I hd no idea a Super H engine could run that fast; I'm pretty happy that it didn't throw a rod.

If the smoke is black at idle, then your idle mixture is too rich. If it is grey and clears up after starting, the valve stem guides are probably worn. They usually give out before the rings do.

You never want to have them running perfect. You would get bored and have no excuse to leave the house. :)

Sounds to me like you missed the slot in the carb with the governor shaft.
