And the next dumb tractor question is...

The nuts and most of the bolts holding the "operator's platform" on my SH are GONE. Rusted into oblivion...well, I did find part of one of the nuts, but I lost it.

I'm still pretty far from actually trying to fix this problem but curiosity has the better of me. Are those studs that can be replaced? Studs that can't be replaced? Bolts? How do I fix this one?

IH always builds stuff about 3-5 times stronger than they need to be, so I don't think the the platform is likely to fly off anytime soon (heck it looks like it will take 3 men and a boy just to lift it).

Anyway...I leave it to the esteemed members of the board to guide me through yet another tractor fix.

Bama - You talking about the tranny top plate here (the big casting the gear lever pokes up thru)? If so it's secured by a bunch of 5/8"(?) cap screws located in insets cast around the perimeter of the deck plate. You certain the cap screw heads aren't really there and hiding in dirt-filled insets?

Hey Bob...we are talking about the same plate and no, most of the heads are really gone I think there are two still in the front and one in the rear, not on the sides. So if I understand the posts here, if I can get the other bolts out and get the cover off, the fix is to remove the remainder of the cap screws (same as bolts, right?) and then simply replace with new ones. Am I on the right track??

Wow Bama - those bolts are really gone?!! If so your plan's right on. Just hope it's not a case where the bolt heads got sheared off and the threaded ends are still in the tapped holes in the tranny case. If so, you've got a challenge ahead of you!!

Be careful about dirt, parts, tools, etc. dropping into the tranny when the cover's off. (The fishin's not real good in there...) Also get some assistance when pulling off that deck plate - it's pretty substantial!

BTW - "Cap screw" is a mechanical designer's fancy name for a plain old bolt....

One last question...I was assuming that the tranny cover/top plate was not threaded and that if the bolt heads were gone, I could simply (well..with a lot of effort) lift off the cover, weld heads on the bolts and remove. This ain't possible if the top plate is threaded...Is it threaded or not???

It's definitely not threaded. Also good advice from Bob M. That cover is HEAVY. I've helped with those covers on M's. And as Bob said, go very cautiously to keep all dirt and other foreign stuff out of there. What would cause those bolt heads to disappear? Do you live in a very harsh climate? Maybe salt air near an ocean?

My 400 top deck wasn't threaded, so my guess would be that your C's isn't either.

Not thinkin, sorry about that. Well anyway, i would still think that the SH deck wouldn't be threaded, could be wrong tho.

Hey guys...thanks for the info. I am well armed with the appropriate info now...as usual, the board comes to the rescue of the those of us still struggling with the basics. These bolt heads beat all I have ever seen, but at least there is a way to fix the problem...Thanks again to all...Binder

They are bolts. After you take the cover off, be careful trying to get them out. Soak them with penetrating oil for a few days, and you might weld a nut on what is left of the bolt to try to remove it.
