I have a 300 IH tractor I converted to a 12 volt system a few years ago. It still has positive ground. A week ago the battery was dead and my son tried to jump start it. Because of the positive ground, he toasted something. It started up and ran a couple minutes, but the ammeter started showing max discharge and then it died. With the ignition key off, when I attempt to hook up the negative battery cable, it archs. I can get it to quit if I disconnect the two generator leads off the voltage regulator. How do I know if my regulator or generator is bad?? Also, how hard is it to convert to 12 volt negative ground?? The only things I bought new when changing from 6-12 volt were the battery, voltage regulator, coil, and lights. I was told the starter and generator would work with 12 volts. Any ideas???

Hi Brian, if you are familiar with using electrical gadgets and meters, I'm sure someone here can tell you how to check your regulator and generator, if you are like me though, take it to the local auto parts store and let them do it for you . As far as converting to a 12 volt negative ground system, it is a fairly simple operation,if you can change the oil in your tractor, you can probably do the conversion yourself with good results. A popular alternator for this conversion is a common general motors "10si"alternator. It was used on many gm vehicles in the seventies,& eieghties, and can be found at just about any auto parts store under a rebuilders # 7127. I purchased one a few months back at an auto zone auto parts store outright (no core to trade in) for about $55.00 ,with an UNCONDITIONAL lifetime warranty. There is tons of information on this conversion in the article archives at this website, as well as a featured story this month on the main page. I have done this conversion to two tractors, they can sit for months at a time, and they fire right up when I need them to. Good luck to you. Tom
