Can anyone tell me the way to pull the crank pulley off of my A? I've got the front end off, as well as the radiator and am down to the pulley. I can't see a bolt holding it on. Is it just press fit??? What type of puller do I use? How do I put it back on??

Thanks for any info.

Brian, I had the same problem with the pulley on a cub. I used a 3 way puller, tighten it down but not till the vains stick out on your neck or you'll have pieces. Put a fair amount of pressure on it then start tapping the end of the bolt on the puller. Do that for a few taps and put a little more pressure on it, and tap it again. Someone on this board told me to do that and it worked. it takes a little while but I think that will work. good luck. Doug

Its a press fit, you need a good puller and a bearing splitter. TO get it back on heat it up,
work fast. You may be able to use a bolt in the
end of the crank to push it back on. Put the bearing puller behing the pulley and hook the puller on to it, a lot of people still break them though. Good luck

I think you can use a harmonic balancer installer
for a small block chevy V-8 to put the pulley back on. I am not sure what the thread is on a chevy but the thread on the tractor crankshaft is
7/16 fine thread. I tried pulling mine on with a bolt and the threads in the crank stripped. I had no choice but to beat mine on with a dead blow hammer. I tried heating it but it cooled off before I got it the whole way on.

I don't know about you fellers but I've had the exact opposite problem !! I noticed that my '44 'A's fan suddenly started hitting the crank pulley....the pulley had walked forward enough to touch the fan. Upon examination, I noticed a tapped 3/8" hole in the pully's hub exactly perpendicular to the key. The key had a set screw scar so I'm assuming that I had simply tossed the old one. I meant to check my'44 'B' before coming in, but, as usual, I forgot. I checked my I&T and it mentions nothing about a set screw, it only shows an illistration of a mounted gear puller. Oh, well....Eddie Petty

Eddie, I've had that problem before. The pulley sloppy on the shaft. It's been a long time now though. I don't remember if a new pulley cured it or not. If I had to do it again I would check to see if a new pulley would cure it and if not, I'd pull the crank, take it to the shop and have 'em build up the end of the shaft to spec.

Early production A's had the setscrew.
