This weekend I will have put the finishing touches
on my 1949 Farmall Super A tractor. Now I find myself at the crossroads. I really need a tractor
that has a 3pt hitch system, and is about the size
of the A or a small utility. I have a large yard and over a 200 foot driveway. I could put a plow on the front, but they run very high in price and
if I'm going to put around $700 +, I may as well invest it into another tractor with a 3pt hitch.
Trouble is IH never got into the 3pt until around
the late 50's. I'd like to make use of the tracor.

Any ideas?? In the end I may end up selling my
little Super A, complete with single bottom plow
and 16A sickle bar mower. But I would really like
to find a way I could use the newer implements.

Thanks, Big M

why don't you think about a fast hitch or 1 point as they are called. these are the hitches found on all super a 100 130 and of course the 140s here in nc

Big M, in my neck of the woods, I had never seen a Super A without a 3 point hitch until I learned on this board that they didn't come from the factory with one. In some places that was just part of dealer prep and the came from the dealership with a 3 point. After 50 years plowing with my Super A, I got to looking and have seen a couple with shop built ones. You can build one yourself for less than $100.00 if you have a torch and welding nachine. Very simple.

I had a Super A myself....great tractor. But when I considered the cost of adding a 3 point hitch, I decided to just buy a different tractor. I had a couple of implements, that weren't three point. This will be blasphemy, but I bought a Ford 2N, that I love. It's go plenty of power, and is low to the ground, and the best thing is all my neighbors goodies (post hole digger, cement mixer) hook right up. I think that's why these little N's go for so much, but they just were a little more advanced for thier day.

Now to all those IH people, I don't mean to say a Super A isn't a great tractor. The Quick Hitch and AC's Snap coupler both had better features, but the three point was the one that became the standard. It's not a brand thing to me. I personally grew up with AC's, and thought Fords were strange.

Good Luck....the best thing to do is keep your A and just get another tractor.

Buy a second tractor with 3 pt hitch, I believe there is a clause in tractor collecting that allows more than one tractor per acre, and or lot. In other words one per acre minimum, no maximum. Am I close on this Red?

Oh I reckon so. I got 11 1/2 acres at the farm and 1/2 at Indy. I only have 2 Hs. Guess I better get stocked up!

I hope there are loopholes to this clause...I only own 1/4 acre and own 2 tractors...If my wife don't know about the rules, I guess I'm OK....

BB,
There ain't no limit as long as there's room for it! Even then, you might get a buddy or neighbor to store it for you. :o)

The equation I am having trouble with is how many Farmalls must I buy to compensate for having that JD 4400 combine??

How about a 3 point hitch conversion? If your Super A has hydralics, the conversion is pretty easy, and not too expensive. The one I saw worked off the linkage to the factory hydralic system.

The only one I know is put out by Worksaver, but
I never saw this unit on a Super A. If anyone
out there does, please send me your pro's and
con's.

Thanks,

Big M

I know a guy who put a three-point conversion on his Farmall 100, so I'm sure there's one for a Super A. He bought it so he could use a finishing mower. I believe Woods does(or at least did) make a single-point Fast-Hitch mower set up for the offset PTO, too. That might be worth looking into.

How about a belly mower?
