i know this may be really dumb but i just wanna know the answer. Is it only 1 wheel that spins on a 2-wd tractor or truck all the time and until that wheel slips does it throw the other wheel in? someone was telling me that and i always thought that each wheel turned indep. and if you had pos. traction you could lock them both where they spun together? I just want to know, do both wheels turn or does just 1 turn and the other 1 kick in when the one that always turns slips? sorry for such a dumb question! :^) Thanks in advance!!!

The driveline/pinion gear turns the ring gear. This is connected thru a spider assembly to both axles thus driving both wheels at the same time. If one wheel loses traction and spins there is no reason for the other wheel to do anything. By applying the brake to the spinning wheel the torque from the drive line is then routed to the other wheel thru the spider assy. causing that wheel to turn.

That's correct. Some tractors, however, have a 'differential lock', often a pedal of some sort, that you can use to force power to both wheels. Saves my bacon on a regular basis on my JD 750.

The reason you don't want the wheels to stay locked all the time is that they rotate at different speeds (the outside wheel turns faster) when turning, and that would be very hard on tires and rear end components if done continuously.

'Limited Slip' or 'Posi-Traction' accomplishes the same locking action by using a clutch to hook the axles together. The clutch packs need to be replaced from time to time as the slipping action while turning wears them out.
