Two questions:
1) I think I have a Super M. How do I tell for sure?

2) I would like to pull off the gas tank to have it cleaned & sealed. It looks like it has 3 bolts that originate in the gas tank. Whenever I try removing the nuts, the bolts turn and I can not figure out how to hold the bolt so I can remove the nut. Am I crazy, what am I missing?

Bill,

There were three series of Super M's. Series I looked just like a regular M with disc brakes. Series II had the live hydraulics, the same center casting as 400-560, battery under seat, and disc brakes. Series III (with or without TA) looked just like Series II except that Series III had the same rear casting as the 400-560 with the holes for mounting the fast hitch cast and tapped at the rear, although the fast hitch was not available till the 400 production. If yours has band brakes it is a regular M.

Great answer, one potential problem- disc brakes were offered as a retrofit on Ms, and may have been available roughly 1947 as an "unlisted" secret option- you had to know the right guy. Orchard tractors started receiving disc brakes at roughly this time- that's why I say "may".

In my answer to Bill in the "Model Evolution" discussion I mentioned that some regular M's were equipped with disc brakes but he would be 99% sure of his being a Super M if it had disc brakes and 100% sure it was a regular M if it did not have disc brakes.

Post the serial number. We will look it up and tell you what you have M or Super M. On the gas tank, there are studs that screw into the tank. go ahead and turn those out. They don't go into the inside of the tank so gas won't run out. just keep turning untill the stud and nut assemble comes out, then you can hole the stud and screw of the nut.

Bill, The Super M had the hydraulic pump mounted between the timing gears and distributor, with steel lines running alongside the engine. That's the easiest way to tell. Otherwise they are pretty much the same unless yours has a TA and then that also makes it a Super (unless the TA was added later on). The engine in the Super M is also larger, but unless you are sure the engine has never been rebuilt or swapped, that could be misleading.

The SM was built in two models or series. The early ones had the old style belly pump hydraulics just like the straight M. The late ones offered a live hydraulics option with the pump between the distributor and the block, and rubber lines connection the the reservoir under the fuel tank. The battery on these models was moved under the seat to make room for the reservoir. The metal hydraulic lines were first used on the 400 series.
But back to your question, the SM can also be identified by disc brakes instead of band brakes. The engine was a 264 instead of a 248 inch model of the straight M.

Hello Bill. The bolts in the tank are studs, they will come out with nuts still on them. the nuts are to adjust the tension on the tank bolts. Good luck.
