3 pt hydraulic ram problem

OK...As I was going through the hydraulics on my Super H with an add on 3pt conversion, I ran across a puzzling problem (to me anyway). The hydraulics go up fine, but as they are going up, hydraulic fluid is being vented from the ram. It does not appear to be leaking from the piston seals but from the underside of the ram.

I have not looked at it carefully, but I think there is a hole at about the midpoint of the ram. My first thought was that it is an overpressure relief, but if so, It must be worn out because there was no weight on the hitch. Any ideas about what is going on here?

Also, can the Super H be rigged for double acting hydraulics and if so, how? Any help is apprecited...BB

Single acting cylinders need a air vent hole or fitting located at its highest point. Some cylinders, such as found on a fork lift, have a small diameter low pressure hose going back to the reservoir.

Relief valves are normally incorporated into the operating or aka directional valve.

Any source of hydraulic power can engineered for double acting service. It is all in the valve. You need an open-center four-way valve. Two ports on the side are "in" and "out". Two ports on the top are cylinder ports. "In" comes from the pump and "out" goes to a T fitting that you will have to add to the reservoir filler pipe. IH made a valve called "Remote Control Valve". It is a four way valve that fits H and M. You will find it in the parts book.

There is a Remote Control Valve up for auction here at YTMAG. The listing includes a picture. It closes today at around 7 pm eastern time.

Based on my understanding of what you posted, the hydraulic fluid is most likely being sprayed out the air vent hole. This being the case, it looks like time to replace some internal seals. Is there any other possibility???

Repacking your cylinder would be a good place to start. Addding a low pressure return hose at the vent would also work.

Not very difficult to repair a tie-rod cylinder. You may need special wrenches on a welded cylinder.
