I am replacing the thermostat on my M and the instructions mentioned a gasket (logical), however, no gasket was included. Can I use Permatex or should I make a gasket? Thanks!

BTD - I replaced the t'stat in my Super H a couple weeks ago. Didn't have the right gasket either. Instead I simply scraped the mating surfaces clean, wiped them with some brake cleaner then put a thin layer of Permatex Hi Temp (red) RTV gasket maker on both surfaces. Bolted everything back together and it works perfect - no leakage whatsoever.

Hello BTD, Reguardless if I have a gasket or not I always use red RTV for a positive seal. Gaskets have to be used when the mating surfaces are not matched close enough. Less RTV is better than more when applying to surface. I haven't had a after leak in years doing it this way.

BTD I make a gasket out of a blank that I buy at NAPA. It has the adhesive on one side so you can plop it on there and start cutting. You can get a formed gasket from IH if you prefer.
