I can't tell you all how useful this message board is! I hope to some day have enough knowledge to contribute more and ask questions less, but for now I have another question. This is going to make me sound like a major newbie, but should I be concerned about a little smoke from the rearmost manifold bolt on my M? I ran it for a half hour today and when I shut down it smoke for a few moments from around that rear bolt. Is that a concern or just a characteristic?
Thanks!

BTD, another possible cause could be your oil gauge connection. If you have an small leak where the tubing connects to the gauge it could drip down right on tip of that last bolt on the manifold. Just a thought...Hope you get it figured out.//FB

The smoke that you saw most likely came from oil running down the exhaust valve stem and then was blown out with the exhaust into the manifold where it seeped out the bolt. The valve guide seals (assuming your tractor has seals) are bad or the valve guides themselves are worn. This is not a problem to fret over.

You do need to check the manifold bolts and retighten them after a few hours of operation if you have had the manifold loose.

If the nuts work loose you can get an intake air leak and burn a valve like I did. I have an M that is in regular use and just developed a whistle. I thought the manifold was cracked but when I went to replace it, the nuts were a half turn loose. Tightening them fixed the whistle but the valve is still burned.
