I have a 1944 M with a magneto that has very little spark. It has a cutout or whatever it is called on the generator. Can I install a new wiring harness, the coil set-up and still use the same generator after removing the cutout box attached to it? If the battery is a little low, does this cause the spark to be weak at the coil wire? Thanks for any help.

Bart the magneto is independent of the electrical system. It is not battery driven. You will still need the generator cutout for rewiring so your generator will charge. IH carries the wiring harness.

If I replace the generator with another generator without the cut out, I just add a voltage regulator right? And of course a 6 volt coil and distributor system. This is absolutely Greek, (no offense intended) to me. Thanks again.

You will still need a cutout or regulator with the generator.. As far as the mag is concerned, I would just replace the coil, points and condenser and be done with it.. I would say that you may want to check the points and condenser first, and if that doesn't work, I can get you a new coil for a very reasonable price.

Just changed the condenser. It took off the first try in about a half second and purrs like a tiger. Thanks again for the help.

Sounds like a good deal.. Usually with mags the condenser goes bad, and all you have is a weak or intermittent spark. one thing I would suggest is to check the coil to see if the date is marked on it.. If it is an early coil with the a soldered ground wire the date will be stamped in yellow. if the ground is a metal tab, the date of the coil will be stamped on the ground tab. If you have any more troubles with the mag, push on the coil and see if it is spongy. If so it is in the process of failing..

I agree. Magnetos are very reliable and it is smart to rebuild a mag rather than go to the expense of installing a distributor.

You can have the mag rebuilt in your area by anybody that works on mags such as are on Lincoln welders. It may just need a $3 condenser.

With a mag you can always start your tractor without a battery, by hand cranking or pulling.

By the way, you'll also need an ignition switch. Your mag switch just has one connection and grounds the mag to kill it. It won't work with a distributor.

I'll buy your old mag and switch if you decide to change. I've got some tractors I'd like to put on mags.

I agree about the desirability of a mag. I prefer them. When you foolishly decide to get rid of your mag and switch, put me on the list too.

You can get repo switches that look identical to the originals for $40, or NOS ones for $45.. The value of mags is dependent on condition..
