cam gear replacement question

Finally determined the source of the metallic knock at low idle on my Super M: The hub has broken on the timing gear - can move the gear fore and aft a good 1/2" inside the timing gear cover. The good news is neither the cam gear nor the mating live hyd pump gear show any chips, abnormal wear, etc. - I'm hoping the idler and crank gears are in similar condition.

So now I gotta replace the gear. But you must must remove the crank pulley in order to take off the timing cover to get at the gear. Can anyone tell me the wrench size size for the large nut that secures the pulley onto the crankshaft? Any tips on getting the nut off and then removing the crank pulley?

Following other instructions, also be ready to repair cam shaft, the nut loosened up letting gear loose on shaft and you will find the key way worn, repaired in past by having a key way cut 180 degrees on shaft and new gear and key. Later cam shafts had a left hand nut to correct this problem.

Bob, Glad to hear you found the problem. I just removed the big nut off my H's crankshaft pulley to replace the front main seal. The H's nut was 1&1/2" so the SM may be larger. Luckily, I have a set of large open-end/box-ends that worked great. I put the tractor in gear and blocked the rear wheels making sure the blocking under the tractor was secure as I had already removed the front upper and lower bolster. After bending the large washer away from the nut, it spun off without moving the tractor a bit. Using an 8", two prong gear puller with heavy plates between the pulley and the jaws of the puller, I eased the pulley right off. The plates help to spread out the force of the puller jaws on the pulley. I agree with the marking of the nut/shaft before hand to aid in re-installing the nut. One word of caution, the edges of those helical gears are like razors so use gloves. To remove the cam gear on the H, I just backed off the nut and using a large punch centered on the center of the camshaft, I tapped the punch with a large hammer. This seemed to loosen the gear enough to just pull it off the camshaft by hand. During reassembly, pay attention to the punch marks on the gears to ensure the thing is in proper time when it's all back together. The helical gears are deceiving as you have to start them a notch or two away from where they will end up after they are in place. Good luck.//FB

I removed that crank pulley a while back on the 400. I'm sure a lot of people may disagree with the way that I did it, but it seems like its done this way quite a bit. First, take a chisel and make a mark on the nut and pulley together so you know when you have the nut tight enough when you put it back on. Take a torch and heat up that nut real good, then use a chisel and hammer to remove the nut counter clockwise. It should come rigte off. The washer behind the nut may be bent over, so you will have to straighten that out before you try to loosen that nut. I used a puller on the pully and took it REAL easy and it came right off, be careful tho, as i've heard they will break. Hope this helps.
