Well I finally got enough parts removed to get at the loose cam gear on my Super M. Originally suspected a broken cam gear hub, but when I pulled the timing gear cover off, the camshaft nut and keeper dropped neatly onto the ground. All that was keeping the cam gear on the shaft was the cover. A couple hundred hours running like this has chewed up the cam key, keyway, cam gear hub, and chipped a tooth on the governor idler gear.

Amazing the tractor still ran. In fact it ran very well - other than a knock at idle - in this condition. Link below has several images of what it looks like inside. ...Bob M

How did you handle the front end when you pulled it off and put it back on?

We removed the front bolster, wheels and radiator as an assembly using a front loader as a lift. I probably should have taken a picture or two of the removal process...

Wow Bob,I put your photo album in my favorite places on my computer.I have been reading your post for a long time and I think it was you I bought a set of fenders from. It is great to see the famous Bob M's glistening red tractors. You sure did a fine job.

Hey Red - That nut came right off! Hardest part was finding a 2-1/2" socket and the right hardware to drive it. But once I got the proper tools the rest was easy. After I bent the keeper ears back and put the socket on the nut, I gave it a "test" yank - the nut gave way immediately and spun right off. The crank pulley was the same way. Got my biggest puller on it and was running the jackscrew down by hand - noticed the pulley was starting to move. So I gave the puller a tug and the whole business slid right off - never got a chance to put a wrench to the puller.

I figured it was gonna take all evening to get the pulley off last nite. Instead it took less than 5 minutes - definitely NOT what I expected. (Usually stuff like this go the other way for me!) ...Bob M

Andy on Bob's photopoint page, over in the left tool bar above the "go", select "My Farmall Tractors". You will see Bob's Super M and Super H.

I agree, good pictures. And a clear explanation.
Good luck with the repairs.

Hmmmm..... .
My M has sort of a knock at idle. I thought it was the generator, but now I'm not as sure. Looks like it's time to break out my wrenches! Hope the fix isn't too expensive.

Bob M: And you said it ran very well except for a knock at idle? Whew.. I think of things like this every time I listen to used machines I am thinking of buying. Ahhh yes, just a knock at idle. I hope the repair goes well for you.. harvey

Those pictures point out another interesting fact. IHC Sealed ALL their castings after they were cast. Trapped in whatever sand may not have shaken or been ground off, and allowed oil to drain back into the pan quicker and allowed the castings to sit longer periods of time before machining without rusting. Also keeps them from rusting when sitting idle but assembled. VERY FEW companies do that anymore at all.

H MN - The Super M had the idle knock when I acquired it. That's why I got it for such an attractive price (free!) - previous owner figured the repair was gonna cost more than the tractor was worth.

Surprisingly it's accumulated 200+ hours of run time in this condition - testament I guess to the robust IH engine design. ...Bob M

Bob M:...FREE..?? That a way to go.! Amazing how UN-important a knock can become ....if the price is FREE.. That's is "the trick" in how good traders do well by getting a price low enough to off set a problem and you couldn't have done better than that. I envy ya now..harvey

Hi Bob, Gees that sure tore things up. You gonna put some lock-tite on them bolt threads when you put it back together?

I would like to ask you what kind of cammera you have. Those and your other pictures are really nice. I need to buy a cammera and might as well get a good one.

T_Bone - You can bet your *ss I'm gonna Loctite the threads when it goes back together! I don't really care to tear it down again sometime!

My camera is a Kodak DC-210+. Been using it for a year and I'm delighted with it. (BTW - The 210+ has been replaced by the DC-215 - more features and lower price.)
