A friend of mine bought an M the other day and the engine is very strong and although the serial number on the tractor shows it to be an M and not a super M can the number on the engine tell if it super M engine? The number stamped on the right side of the engine is FBKM59477 and the serial number on the bell housing is 60212.Do these numbers match up and go together?I am new at these Farmalls, thanks in advance.

BigJ, At some point in the M's life, it may have been overhauled and had the cylinder bore increased. The normal was to up it to 4" from the standard 3-7/8". Only way to tell for sure that I know of is to pull the head and have a look. This was a common practice in the late fifties/early sixties to gain some horsepower.//FB

The numbers may or may not be the same. You have a very late 1942 engine on a very early 1943 regular M tractor.

I think the Supers and 400 450s had the cubic inch numbers cast in the block such as C264 or C281. The M engines didn't have these numbers cast.

The three older original IHC tractors that I've owned ( a '29 10-20, a '31 22-36 and a '37 F-20)
all had motor numbers that were the same as the serial numbers. I imagine the practice was carried on with the letter series. I'd say this M block is used replacement for the original.
