Anyone know the torque spec for the camshaft gear retaining nut on a Super M? It's got a 1" left-hand fine thread and is only 3/8" thick. I fear stripping it if it's overtightened, but neither want to install it too loose.

Any info is appreciated...

I usually just run it on with my 1/2 inch impact ,i don't let it just hammer on it .Run it down tight then let it hammer for about 2 to 3 seconds, i run my c/p 735 at 90 lbs air prussure . Also i use some blue locktite on the threads then bend the lock plate over on the nut ,you should be in good shape then.

Thanks for the info! It was an improperly installed lock plate (let the nut loosen and fall off) that started all my problems...

Bob, I can't help on the answer to your question but I was curoius as to what you decided regarding the repair. How much did you replace, repair and reuse?

ltf - Looks like the only part I'll have replace is the cam gear itself - hub and keyway on the old one is wallowed out pretty bad. The other timing gears are still in good shape - a chipped tooth on the governor idler and a few marks on the distributor drive gear. Also the keyway in the camshaft has a bad chip out of it. But I found that by using a new key, the new cam gear fits tight and drives the camshaft OK - even before the nut is run down. So I'm gonna try it with the camshaft as is (don't really care much to tear the engine down to replace the cam!)

Bob, When you get ready to put the gear on the cam apply some J B Weld to the side of the keyway where the damage is. I saw your previous pics and I had a similar problem and the J B Weld fix has held good for two seasons. Sounds as if you have everything under control. Good luck and thanks for the update.

Hey ltf - Great minds thinking alike here?!! What you suggest is exactly what I did (applied JB Weld to the damaged side of the keyway). Gonna let it cure a day or two before reassembling.

I'll post a photo of the fix before I put the new gear on...

Both Bob M and myself are responsible only unto ourselves on this and both of us are capable of bearing the consequences. We have enough gray hair to feel confident of our fix and I doubt if either of us are uncomfortable.
