I've got an IH 300. It's been running pretty well all summer, but had it out this weekend. It was very cold for this time of year, upper 30's. It started up OK and after a few minutes was able to decrease the choke setting to open. It ran this way for 10-15 minutes and then acted as tho it wanted to stall. I pulled the choke out and it ran smoothly again. To get back to my house I had to leave the choke shut. As soon as I tried to open it, the tractor would start to stall. I had enough fuel in the tank. Does temperature affect too lean a mixture?? Any suggestions out there??

It sounds like it's icing up. My corvette would do this in similar weather, I would just richen the fuel-air mixture a touch. After the underhood temp got warm the problem would go away, but not an option with the location of tractor air intakes.

Brian,
I'm leaning toward Tractor Vet's diagnosis. If it's been running fine up until the cold snap I'd suspect icing closing off or restricting the carb just behind the butterfly. If the tractor runs fine after the weather warms up a bit, TV is right. If not, the other folks are. Just don't waste money trying to troubleshoot a problem that you won't be able to fix. Try it again when (if) the weather warms a bit.

My 2¢,
Phil

If you have good fuel flow to and from the carb,it is a good posibilty that you had carbuator iceing ,with the tep in the 3o's and high humidity this can and does happen .Also the oil company's have not stared to blend fuel for winter just yet .I was talking to my fuel supplyer and he tould me that they were going to start in mid mounth. This cold snap took us off gaurd.

The screen inside the carberator could be plugged.

Before tearing anything down, I would verify that the tractor is getting enough fuel. I believe your tractor has a plug in the bottom of the fuel bowl on the carb. If this is correct, remove the plug and observe the flow of fuel. Normally you will get a rush of fuel then you will get the supply that is available to to carb. This should be a steady stream about the size of a match stick. If this supply is not there then take the fuel line off at the carb and check the flow again. The flow here will be greater than what you observed above. Just trace everything back to the fuel tank. You will find blockage somewhere in the supply. Advise your findings.

Hi Brian, Sounds like it's carb rebuild time and while your at it a good time to drain and clean the fuel tank and prefilter.

Yes cold or heat will show up a weak part in a hurry as this is when everything has to be top notch for runing.
