Haven't had much time to be on the boards, been thinking about deer hunting(the real ones not the green!!), anyways my F12 mag was rebuilt just before I got it running about a month ago and when I turn the spark advance to full retard I thought it was supposed to ground out the mag and force it to jump the safety gap insted of firing the spark plugs. Well I do that and she just keeps on running, I checked for binding in the rod but that's not it. Now I can shut it down by retarding the mag and pushing in the govenor rod as far as it will go and she will just slowly die out.....now what?

I'm rebuilding my mag now. I think the manual said something about the cup the points sit in has 2 prongs on the side that make contact with the mag housing to ground the mag when you shut it down. If the mag is over oiled, or worn, the prongs won't make good contact. If I remember correctly, you remove the breaker cup from the mag, then the 2 prongs can be bent out slightly until they make good contact.

I'll look it up and let you know. It might be a day or 2.

Why not just choke it off? or short the mag directly? or maybe i'm way off on what your problem is?

Does it help to push on the arm on the advance mechanism on the mag? I really have to lean on my retard to get it over far enough for it to short out and die, due to slop in the linkage.

I probably should get off my fat tractor seat and go grab the book to verify this, but it also occurs to me that the point gap setting may have some effect on this if it's too wide.

No, no help in pushing an the breaker cap directly. Tried that with the advance rod disconnected from the cap and makes no difference.
Gonna look into some of the other suggestions as far as the grounding post inside the advance cap that is supposed to ground out the points to the housing...
