We are working on the old M, and conflicting information says that the rims should be silver (aluminum) or red. Which one was the original color? Also, the lights appear to have been painted black at one time. Any help would be appreciated. We also had a knock, but blowing out the carbon got rid of most of it. Adding a straight pipe made it harder to hear. LOL!

I have just completed restoring 2 1948 MD's that my father and grandfather bought. The original color of the rims (front and back) were silver. The lights were red, however they were primed with a black coating of some sort at the factory.

Rims were originally galvinized,so should be silver to duplicate this. Any silver will do.
Lights should be red.

Thanks to you both for the help. The color specs call for off-white also. Where would that be used??? The tractor is in pieces in the shop with the first two coats of International Red, and the decal kit is supposed to be in today. There's a tractor pull for beginners (kindergarten pulling?) on Saturday and we'll be there.

What specs are you talking about? To my knowledge, there should be no off-white on that tractor.

When I looked up the "Paint Codes" in the research & Info column at the left side of this page. Those specs.

Those are references to paints used at various times, not on just one tractor. The off white (known as cream) was not used on the M tractor, but rather on later tractors such as the 350 and 450- unless of course it refers to the implement color- the paint codes on the site are less than informative in telling what they are for.
