They are good cheap horsepower. We used to have a 1086, basically the same tractor just less horsepower. That thing worked great out in the field where you could just put it in gear and let it go, but was miserable whenever it had to be used in an application where frequent gear shifting was required. It was my Dad's favorite tractor, but we finally had to trade it in on a Magnum 7220 at 8000 hours. It wouldn't handle the new Kinze planter we put on it, too many electronics and not enough hydraulic power.

Brian - I worked at FARMALL when the 1586's were built. I only ever drove 1 once at a Red Power Show Down day. RedFan & Kevin are right, Only 12 forward gears w/ TA, 3 spd box W/ HI/Lo range+ TA. 1000 RPM PTO only, 161.5 PTO HP @ Neb. Most popular option was the IPTO unit from a 986/1086 so you could get 540/1000 rpm PTO in them.

Just a few points. All the 15 numbered Inters of that era were equipped with a 3 sd. box, with TA and range change, giving 12 forward and 6 reverse speeds. Also had planetary reduction, with inboard brakes and 436 cu.in. motor. Good tractor, as the planetary reduction made the drivetrain more reliable. Regards, Redfan.

We had a 1586 for 7 years, oil analisis told us to change main bearings once and that was all it took. The main fault on these was the brakes, they get oot of sorts quickly and are expensive to get repaired, they are diffrent because of the planetaries. the next series used this system to but havent been a proablem. Look for the water conditioner filter as it should have one.
About 150 hp.

Sorry I was trying to remeber hp and should have looked it up. The cab on this series is worlds better than the 66 series. The 66s were really an add on cab from the factory, the 86 were enginered from the start to be intergrated, the hood does not run into the cab. To bad this cab wasn't ready for the 66s as sales had to be lost to JD because of that cab.
my 2 cents

The 1586 is around 160 HP and has a 4 speed main box. The fuel tank will be behind the seat instead of on top of the engine. Depending on the area and condition, the tractor is worth 6000 to $9000. The tractor, I believe, was made from 1975 thru 1979. I saw a IH 1486 (good condition) go for $6000 at an auction. Have fun, I still use a 1566.
