I purchased a 47' cub that has been sitting for three years. it starts up and idles good, it smokes a little too. 1st gear and reverse it takes off ok but when you shift into 2nd or 3rd it stalls. is it bad or stuck rings? can I put something in the oil to maybe unstick them? what is the compression suppose to be so I can check the cyl.

thanks,Bill

My father-in-law has done quite extensive work on a friend's C. I also have another acquaintance that has a cub that just dies in third gear. My father-in-law suggested that this stalling under moderate load could be the result of a messed up governor. He said the C that he had worked on ran fine until you turned the mower on then it died. The governor was the culprit. Good luck!

The first thing I would do is a compression check. You should be at least 80 lbs. on all four. A good tight engine will get you around a 110 lbs. I would also take the valve cover off and check for a stuck valve and also check your valve gaps. If all is in order with those 2 I would definetley look at the carb. and ignition system. Sitting really takes a toll on these things. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a combination of all. Let us know what you find. Bill {Antique Acres}

Mine did that and it was a stuck valve . you can run the engine , and
pull one spark plug wire off . check for rpm drop . replace that plug wire . And continue . If you pull a plug and get no change . Thats your
bad cylinder .
Post what you find please .
Go off Bills post he's right on Thought this will help too
