I had heard somewhere that it is possible to convert a 6volt generator to a 12 volt generator. Is this possible?

Absolutely! I just went thru a nightmare concerning that. I've a 51 International I-6 with a 6 volt pos ground. The previous owner tried to switch over to 12 volt neg ground and did everything wrong. So in my adventure I took both the generator and the starter down to have them rebuilt.( because they were fried) The fun began when I learned (after 250.00)that no one was sure if both were rebuilt as 6 volt or 12 so after alot of trouble I was able to speak to the fellow who actually did it and confirmed that they were rebuilt as 6 volts. Thank God! My only delema now is this:Now that ALL electrical components have been replaced with original parts for 6 volt pos ground system including ALL wires and connectors The engine turns over nice and strong but I am not getting spark so of course it won't fire.TOTALLY STUMPED!!!

Vernon for a quick trouble shoot, hotwire the coil switch and see if you get spark.

No. Does your tractor have a coil switch like on the H?

You sure can Ben. I have had 3 or 4 H generators converted to 12 volt over the past 10 years.

O.k. two more question I thought of, Do i have to have the starter converted over also? and Do I have to go with heavier wire, cables, connects? I upgraded more of wires to a 12 or 14 gauge and battery cables are new. Thanks for your help!!

No the starter will be fine as a 6 volt. It just spins faster. Cable wise, the 6 volt cables are more than adequate for a 12 volt system. You can actually get by with thinner cables on a 12.
