The resistance coil on the switch, I suspect, is broken. Would this keep the charge permanently low or high? Can I make a new resistance coil?

the res for the lites is for the rear one only the flat one goes to the field for high charge look at your decal if you have the right one it will be self explained but the front lites did NOT dim also the control box is where the system gets the gnd to work right we are talking about 6v A B and C tractors arent we

There are 2 resistors on the light switch.

One (field resistance) regulates charge rate. This is the flat one. If it is broken, high charge will work normally and low charge will be zero.

The other (dimmer resistance) is for the dim headlights. This one is round. If it is broken, you will have normal brights and no dims.

If I needed to replace either one, I would go to Radio Shack and buy an appropriate wire wound resistor.

Guys, I'm sorry for not being clear, the switch is on an H and the field resistance is what we're talking about. Is there any way that the high charge setting would not wotk? The high and low setting on the switch do not make a difference in the charge rate.

And what is the unchanging charge rate? If it is zero, you may have a bad switch, a bad wire, bad connection on the wire or a bad ground. The ground has to be from the switch to the switch box cover, to the switch box, to the steering support to the tractor chassis. If any of them are bad, it won't charge.

Try putting a jumper wire directly from the generator F terminal to a good ground on the generator itself to test bypassing all these failure points.

The unchanging charge rate is 5 to 7 amps with the tractor wide open. I'll do all these great suggestions tomorrow. The previous owner didn't shed the tractor much so it's quite rusty. Hopefully the ground is all that's wrong. Thanks guys.

Bergen - If the field resistor is broken, you'll get high charge on the "H" position and no charge on "L". Now if you're getting the same charge rate with the switch in either position, here's several possibilties:
1 - A bad light switch
2 - Wiring between the switch and gen is incorrect
3 - The original cutout relay was replaced with a voltage regulator. The "L" and "H" switch settings now have no significance - other than being two "off" positions for the lights.

Most likely the cause is #2 or #3....

Forgot to mention: field resistance 2.8 ohms, dimmer resistance 5 ohms.

Yes you can make a resitor coil. The best wire to use would be a mig welding wire, wrap around a piece of 1/2 round stock to make the coil .fasten the coil to the switch assy.THIS IS ONLY A QUICK FIX THE WIRE WILL NOT LAST VERY LONG, I WOULD USE THE LIGHTS ON THE BRIGHT SETTING TO TRY TO SAVE THE HOME MADE COIL.
