Bob, I had the same problem. The tooth that is on the handle was bolted on. I unscrewed it and went to the IH dealer and bought a new one. Cost about $5 but it stays in one place now

Hey...

I had that same problem on my "H" - I had the saw
tooth style throttle, and my throttle lever had
become so worn that the flat metal part that
engaged with the sawteeth was worn completely
through. I temporarily fixed the problem with a
thin piece of sheet metal wrapped around the
throttle lever and sticking up into the sawteeth,
then took it apart and dropped a bead of weld on
the worn down area to build it up, filed it to a
point repainted and reinstalled...

works like a champ and looks like new

Pete

Bob, sounds like your throttle control handle or teeth are worn badly. Which kind do you have? The jagged saw tooth or the square teeth? Sometimes it is the rear end of the lever that slides on the cover plate that is worn so badly that it no longer exerts enough pressure upwards to hold the handle in the proper tooth.

Its round with square teeth . I will take a peek at the metal part that slides . Does seem to be quite a bit of pressure the wrong way against it though .
About how much force is normal ? This is my first old tractor , so nothing to go by .
Maby take a look at my neighbors too .
There are a few of these around this area still . Alburg , Vt Sounds like you got what it is . Thanks

Bob, that single tooth on the lever is replaceable. If it is worn I would replace it.I bought my last one at my local Case-IH dealers.

Bob check your spring underneath the cap to see if it is possibly broken. If it is OK, I usually add one more washer to give the spring more tension. That square tooth cap and throttle lever is an aftermarket which I have on one of my Hs.

Bob:

I had same problem. Took a welding rod and welded on a dab to the tooth. Then filed it down to fit the notches. Probably need done again in few years, but it'll be somebody elses problem by that time I reckon.
