I have a '48 Farmall H and tried the hydraulics yesterday.
They did not work as prescibed in the manual. I do not know
the history of the hydraulics. Fluid level is fine and clear.
What are the possible problems and cost and complexity of fixes?
Does a factory service manual have details on this?

Exactly what happens, or doesn't happen? With the clutch released, and the hydraulic lever pulled, does the pump seem to develop pressure? Any noise? This is a single-acting, or one-way system on these tractors; only one hose goes to a cylinder, not two. If the system is connected as described in the manual, and there is NO noise, NO pressure, NO oil flow, remove the access plate on the bottom of the tractor behind the belly pump and see if the connector is installed between the pump and the transmission. You might also try removing the plug from one port (WITH THE OUTLET TURNED DOWN!) and briefly engage the lever to see if oil comes out.

I had the same problem also; if after you've checked the coupler and all else and its still not working; you might have a stripped out impeller inside your pump like I did. I switched pumps with my parts tractor and she worked fine.

The hyd. pump on an H is relitively simple in design. It only has two moving parts. If you need to remove it after finding no pressure at the outlet, drop the inspect. plate and see if the coupling is turning. There is also a lever on the belly towards the rear of the tractor that enables you to disengage the pump. This lever is held in position by a capscrew that threads into the belly. It may be that it is just shut off.
