According to my shop manual, The springs on the Super H's clutch are supposed to have 165-175 lbs. @ 1 and 7/16 inches. Can I test this myself and if so how? Where do I measure the 1 and 7/16? Is it how far the pressure plate moves or what?

Actually quite a few high performance engine machine shops have spring testers. Main thing is to make sure the springs are straight and relatively equal in pressure. Some place like JEGS or SUMMIT (both have web sites) have testers that are hydraulic and fit in a vice. They're actually for valve springs but I won't tell. If your afraid the clutch will slip if the springs are weak you can always shim them. Drop a flat washer or two in the spring cup! just make sure you don't get the spring into coil-bind before the clutch releases.

Bergen - This test presumes you've got the springs out of the clutch cover assembly. The numbers mean when a spring is compressed so it measures exactly 1-7/16" end to end, the force required to compress it should be 165 - 175 lbs. Not real easy for the guy with normal mechanic tools...

Got to your local clutch and brake shop. Mine rebuilt the clutch for my MD, including new springs, new facing and new throwout bearing. I think it cost $120, but I can't remember for sure. I think IH wanted that much just for the clutch plate.

Understood. Is there a place where I might buy the springs separately instead of having to buy a rebuilt pressure plate assembly?

Well, I didn't ask the guy at the clutch and brake shop, but I think he would have sold me the springs if I had asked.
