Stuck in gear!!

Ok guys...bail me out here. My Super H gets stuck in one gear every once in a while. The first time it happened I think it may have been stuck in 2 gears. The shifter would move easily, but it wouldn't alter the configuration of things in the gearbox.

I finally got is sorted out by moving the shifter through all the gears and moving the shifter quickly. There seems to be more "play" in the shift lever than there should be, but I don't have anything to compare it to except my Cub and a JD 4020.

Anyway, sifting through the old posts, I come up with possibly a bent shifter fork...but what else?? I'm sure the gear oil hasn't been changed in a long while, so I have 6 gallons ready to go in when I have the chance to change it. Could that be a contribting factor?

Come on guys...give me your best guess...I really don't want to take the tranny cover off yet...thanks...BB

Hey Bama - I have a Super H with a loose shift lever that does the same thing every once in a while. Removed the shift lever and swapped it with the ones from my wife's dad's Super H. The problem disappeared.

Comparing the two sets of shifter parts revealed the bottom end and the pivot hole are worn on my shift lever. Also my shifter retaining pin is kinda chewed up. My "to do" list includes finding replacement parts (or using weld to build up the ones I've got).

That pin The Red mentioned is how you should get the thing out of gear. We had a '39 H what was worn like that even back in the 60's. Shift forks shouldn't be bent if it doesn't jump out of gear. But a little bit of weld or braze on the end of the shift lever should stop the problem.

BB there is a big ol pin that holds the shifting lever in place. Drive out that pin and the lever will come out. The end on the lever is probably worn enough that is is not engaging the 3 shift forks properly.
