My father and I just rebuilt our 1950 Cub Farmall and can't get it to start. We are getting good fire out of the coil but weak fire to the plugs.We have new points set at .o18, new condenser,fairley new distribeter cap, new wires and new roter. Sometimes we get good fire to plugs and then all of a sudden get verry little fire to them. Am running out of hair to pull out!

Bill Two things come to mind. A Bad condensor! I have seen several times that GM parts were delivered and packed in a Ehclin box. The old return bad part to parts house for credit trick.
#2 I would check your primary wiring between the points and the coil, that little wire is usually exposed and works hard and may be way out on resistance or chafed to ground.
Also double ck your polarity of the wires on the coil. Good luck

You say good spark at coil but weak or intermittent at plugs? Sounds like bad insulation or a short somewhere. Check everything inside the distributor (connectors,etc), sounds like something is touching (or almost touching) a ground.

Any chance the new wires are modern graphite core (RF TYPE)? If they are, try some old fashoned WIRE core wires. also I Know a guy who put a new set of points in one of those green machines -- wouldn't start. Replaced old points -- ran fine. DROVE HIM NUTS!! Seems the point manufacturer coated the points w/ some sort of plastic protective stuff like you see on a new tool bit. Can we assume fuel/air is not a problem? Keep us posted on how this goes.

If you're getting weak fire at the plugs, is this with the plugs in or out? Maybe there're gapped wrong, fouled, or not grounding properly, or grounding too much (losing spark) or cross-wired. I've also heard of engines being timed 180 degrees out. Not saying you don't know what you're doing, but all these mistakes are easy to make.

A few things come to mind. First are you sure your cap is good? Second are you running on 6 volts or 12 volts and using a resistor? If using a resistor unhook it and see if that makes a difference. I would lay my money on you have a bad condensor though. Although it may be new dosen't mean it works. With your points closed and the switch on, with a screwdriver open and close them and see if you get a good spark jumping across. If so it might be your cap. Make sure the button in the cap on the bottom of the coil wire post is good. I had that BB looking thing come out on mine and it drove me nuts until I looked at the obvious and found it. Let us know what you find. I am sure others will have better advice, but this may be somewhere to start. Bill {Antique Acres}
