JUMPY TACKOMETER NEEDLE

When running my 450 at full throttle the tack needle bounces all over the place but when throttled down, even a little, then it settles down.

Seems to give accurate readings as it shows correct rpm at idle speed.

Any ideas on what is causing this and correction?

Maybe just needs to be cleaned?

Thanks much for the help but can you be a little more specific as to what core and what housing.

Thanks again.

Unscrew the threaded ferrule at either end of the tach cable then pull the cable out of it's fitting. Now take a pair of pliers, grab the square tip that's sticking out of the middle of the cable (that's the cable core) and pull it out. It should slide out fairly easily. Lightly coat the core with grease, then reverse the process to reassemble.

If it's gets cold where you are (< 32 deg), suggest using white lithium (snowmobile) grease.

Pull the core out of the housing and put some Vaseline on it.

Hi Bob, Sounds like the cable is binding. You might want to take the cable off and flush it with WD 40.
