300 timing problem

I have a 300 that esems to jump timing. I set the timming and it run. Maybe a min. or two back fires in the exh. and dies. Check the timming and it is 180deg. out rewire the cap aand it starts runs back fires and dies. Timming is now back to correct. Does anyone any ideas of where to look or what to do. thanks

If you have a IHC dist.The gears in the dist. may have failed due to lack of lube and normal wear.You will have to remove & take apart dist. Heed the Reds advice on T.D.C.

Bryan you will have to remove the distributor assembly including the base unit from the engine. There is a distributor drive key that probably is sheared where the distributor gear bolts on. I recommend you get the engine on #1 TDC before you remove the assembly and note or take picture of the rotor position.
