With so maney old tractors being restored the question has come up I do I check cam timing with out taking off timing cover. There is a way for 4 & 6 cylinders. I only have information for the 4 cylinders now will post 6 latter.
! turn no 1 cylinder TDC, from the front of the engine valve 1&2 should have clearence, also valve 3 7 5 should have clearince, then turn engine 180 degrees to TDC valves 8,7,6 & 4 should have clearence. I use to use this for seting the valves back in the 60,s & 70,s you can use to set valves and save time turning engine for each cylinder. If the cam is off just 1 tooth you will be able to hear it when the engine runs so iof cam was not set by the timing marks it would be hard to get cam off 180 degrees so 4 would be no 1 as some one asked. As I said I will get the right info for the 6cyl this is go for all with 1342 order and the 6 good for 153624 order

Mr Schrunk, I have a Farmall M series tractor and i am having problems with the valves not opening when i turn the engine over. when it did run it backfired a little but i felt that it might be the carb causing that but then it backfired pretty hard and now it wont run at all. i feer that i might have shired the cam or cam gear. i am not sure on what the exact problem is, i havent took things apart yet. all i can say is that i dont think the cam is rotating when the engine is turning over. could you help guide me in the right direction on how to begin my repair? do you have any sugestions on what might cause this to happen, for ex, shired keyway or striped cam gear?....??? is the cam driven by a chain? also is it nessasary to remove the front stearing callum and radiator to gain access to remove the timming cover for repairs. i am not sure if there is enough clearance to remove the crank pully with out dimantaling the stearing components. if you can help please reply sincerly, Chad

CHad you have got to pull the front cover. One of three thingsto come to mind, sheered key, broike gear or broke cam,but susupect sheered key.I think it was Bob M who had the same problem a little while back. His pics may still be in the archives somewhere.
