Bill, the blades are the "flail" type, meaning there is a bearing of sorts that the bolts go through in securing the blades. It was made like that so when you hit something you don't do damage to the mower or shafts. If you are toying with your mowing deck, I suggest a good amount of penetrating oil and a wire brush. In addition, the nuts are castilated and are secured with a cotter pin. When reinstalling sharpened blades, make sure the blades still have the flail motion. Do not over tighten. The cotter pins will do thier job.

Phlogiston.

The hole is to gain access to the bolts which secure the blades.

Don't think so Bill. The mowing is done on the first inch or so at the end of the blades. Any lift must be created there to be effective.(I think)
