Bill, tell us please, you have bought the manuals, haven't you? An operators manual, a parts catalog and a service manual. To me, the parts catalog would be the most valuable of the three. The drawings in the parts catalog show how stuff goes together. The operators manual has some specifications, while the service manual has other specs. When you get aggravated with the tractor, go read the books for a while. The book learning and the hands-on experience will reinforce each other. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Bill you mentioned that it wouldn't continue to run when you pulled out the choke. My guess is that the float setting is off and not allowing enough fuel to flow. With the carburetor bowl removed, push up the float so the needle is closed. The distance from the bottom of the float to the edge of the upper carberutor body should be approximately 1 1/8 inches. The IT manual (they built tractors didnt' they?) states 1 13/32 inches.

Why would the plugs be getting fouled if the engine is starved for fuel? Seems like an indicator of too much fuel to me. An improperly set float in the carb. sounds like the most likely culprit in either case. So maybe it's the right answer for the wrong reason???

Anyway, I'm confused, which isn't unusual.

He mentioned sooty plugs but they were dry. If it was getting way too much fuel and konking, I would think they would be wet.

Would depend on how quickly he pulled them, wouldn't it? Anyway, if he cleans them and they get fouled again, we'll know more. It'll be interesting to see what the problem turns out to be on this on.

Yep I wish Bill well. He has battled this one for awhile. I have mis-diagnosed before so it will be interesting once we got this pup, er cub, running well to see what the real culprit(s) was/were.

Couldn't the timing be off some and cause those plugs to foul?

Was the carb. adjusted ? Is the fuel fresh ?
Sounds like its either rich or running out of fuel . Could be dirty gas tank , or clogged gas line I dont remember all the details of this tractor . Been a lot done to it . Is a steady supply of gas getting to the carb .
I had the float fulcrum pin drop on my tractor .
Would like to know if gas is pouring out the carb. or not .

Bill: forget the governor. check your fuel delivery at the carb. Remove the fuel line at the carb and run fuel into a can to check the flow. If you've got good flow, take that carb apart and check the float needle and seat are not sticking and float height properly adjusted, not hanging up on the hinge pin, no dents or pin holes in the float the float should float well in a can of fuel.
