I'm also known as Peachy. . .and I wasn't being a smart alec about tractors, I love tractors, they are great, really. .. they are. And I have another question to add to my list as well. . . What is the top speed a tractor can go? Cause I see them on the road all the time, some go slower than a turtle. but then others, that look like the same brand, go about 40 miles an hour. I don't know if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but it went much faster.

Most tractors now in use top out at about 22 miles an hour. Manufacturers are turning out new tractors that are crowding the 30 mph barrier. JCB, a British company, makes a tractor that will go up to 40-45mph, but it is not well suited to heavy work such as tillage, it is more of a high speed, light draft sort of tractor.

Before tractors will be able to go any faster, several issues need to be addressed. The steering and braking systems need to be redesigned to include some sort of mechanical control instead of straight hydraulic power in case power is lost at high speeds. Some sort of suspension system will have to be put into place to handle rough roads. Tires will have to be redesigned with better ride and balance characteristics. One cannot also forget the implement the tractor will be pulling. It too must also be able to handle higher speeds. You also run into problems with laws and such. As the tractors turn into more of a truck, will the driver need to have a license and complete driving school?

Peachy, My F-14 really cooks at a top speed of 3.75 mph! Yes, you can walk faster than that!

Hey Peachy, Your posts are fine, thats what these boards are for, to learn from these posts, and asking questions is the best way to do it. I'm 14 and find these places a great place to ask questions, or to help someone out. As an answer for your question, tractors are not meant for speed. the engines are built to deliver high torque(pulling power) at a low engine RPM.

My 1950 Custom has a top speed of around 55mph without a govenor. It will get up to around 45mph in 200 feet drag race track. Most tractors will vary from 8mph to 30mph. I have read were a man took a simpson tractor and used it in tractor oval track racing and that thing would run 80mph, this info came from the fine magazine Antique Power.

Hi Peachy: I don't know about the newer machines, but my old Oliver will top out about 14 mph in road gear. Keep up the posts, conversation is what these boards are about.

A gentleman by the name of Ab Jenkins set the speed record for tractors, in an Allis-Chalmers U, of 67.877 MPH in the 1930's.

Hi Peachy, don't let some of these guys get to you, your posts are just fine. Slower is best as tractors were not made for speed. 15 to 20mph is more than enough but some of the custom cutters around here can do 35 on some of the larger tractors but not me as it's too hard on the equipment.

Some of the New Holland larger tractors such as the Genesis series can go 30 mph. Most larger Farmalls (model H up) can go about 16 mph. Older JD's ( size and up)until 1960 can go about 10 mph I believe. My Case 930 can go about 15 mph.
