I have a leaking carburetor on a 1948 Farmall Cub. Gas is leaking out of orifice at bottom of air intake. I have checked the float and needle valve and they appear ok. Any other ideas? The orifice is sealed with a spongy material and small cap. What purpose does this serve?

My comments are the same as Haas & Dan. Float level set wrong, or needle valve not seating and sealing. Could also make sure float floats, shake it and listen for any gas inside it.

Your float is set too high, or the needle valve is worn and leaking through, or the float is sticking or the float has a hole in it and does not float. Dan is correct, the hole is to let excess gas escape if any of these conditions occur or if the engine gets flooded from too much choking.

The purpose of the orface on the bottom of the carburator is to allow excess fuel to escape. The spongy material and cap keep dirt out of the carb. You might check float level, also make sure float does not have any fuel in it. On some of the carbs the shaft that the float pivots on gets worn and can cause it to hang up. Just some suggestions
