This tractor is located in East Tennessee. The asking price is $2400.00 as you see it, with the mid-mount and rear cultivators. There is a slight leak at the carb (probably gasket or stuck float) and a leak on the hydraulic pump (probably gasket). The tractor starts easily (using ether at 10 degrees), does not smoke, hydraulics oeprate smoothly throughout the range. There is no front end wobble at full throttle in road gear. The seller has the drawbar to replace the rear cultivators. There are no other implements included in the price and he will not come off the price at all.

This will be my first tractor and I intend to use it to plow a garden, convert some open land to pasture and do some bush-hogging on open, sloping land - is this a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance for your advice/assistance.

I do not agree with others here that the price is too high. These tractors are very popular in East Tenn (I live here) for cultivating tobacco. One as pictured and as you describe will often go $3000 at auction, maybe even more. This tractor looks like a later model. I base that on the hookup for the rear rockshaft. Looks like it might have had the fast hitch at one time. This tractor is ideal to plow a small garden. You need the drawbar and the mounted plow. Not so good for the bush hog though and not so good for sloping ground. If very steep, you need to set the wheels out and you need to have solution in the tires for stability. I used a Super A and then a 140 for years to mow 4-5 acres with a belly mower, to plow and disc my garden and to plow snow on my driveway. It should not need ether to start. Should fire right up on gasoline with just the choke if everything is like it should be.

I paid $1000 for a Farmall 100 with a set of cultivators. These tractors are real popular with tobacco farmers for cultivating tobacco fields. Great tractor cultivating but not so good for other jobs.

Bama Red: Pay careful attention to advice given by ltf in nc. It is sound.

I have a Farmall 140 which is about the same as a Super A. The tractor does a beautiful job of laying off rows, planting, and cultivating. This is what the tractor was designed to do. It is of no use for bushogging or for land preparation.

If you are seriously into gardening, you would be well pleased with a Super A. For land preparation you would do well to get a heavier tractor with 3 point hitch. Vernon Holt

Bama Red, I read your post closely, particularly to the end use for the tractor. A couple things come to mind. Yes, the price is too high and secondly, IMHO, this is not the tractor for your use. Eventhough these are highly sought after and are probably one of the prettiest tractors to collect, it remains primarily a cultivator tractor. To plow (not cultivate) a garden and to rotary cut and perform general clean up duties you need a lower center of gravity tractor with good three point hydraulics and easy on /off capability for the operator. I know that I will get flamed for stating this but you need to look at an 8n Ford. Same money and with all of the above referenced features.

Oh geez, not an 8N. The only thing worse would be a 9N. Any model Ferguson would be better than an 8N. A 30 or 35 would be a vast improvement over a Ford and for about the same money.

Actually in this area the 8n Fords go for about $500 more than SAs. I hate to admit it, but the little aitns are useful little critters and wouldn't mind having one, but other than that they completely lack character that I love in Farmalls. And the 600 and 800 series are even better, especially the 660s and 860s with IPTO. The 860s would seem just about perfect for Bama Reds use, but then so would an IH 340 Utility.

Looks original and un-modified and pretty straight. To me that's worth alot. Also looks like a later model, maybe 50-53. But I think 2400 is a little too high. I've seen better one's with a belly mower for 2200. I'd say this one's 1500 - 1800. Only you can assess the real condition. Truely in good shape with 6V electrics should not need ether to start in 10 deg. Don't forget the money needed for the plow, an aftermarket 3 point hitch ($300) and bushhog.

BR...too high!! I don't know where you are, but if you live in Alabama, I know of 2 that were for sale earlier this week.

Dora Alabama Super A with planter, cultivator, new paint $2700 (205)647-2697

Tuscaloosa Alabama Supers A with equipment (not sure what) $1995. (205) 339-4177

I know of several Super As that might be for sale, but in Alabama you should be able to get a full set-up for what this guy wants. I see lots of Super As in the area, so if you want one, you should be able to get what you want for a better price. E-mail me off line if you need more info...BB

PS...Don't start gas tractors on ether...I don't know this first hand, but have heard it can damage gas engines. If the engine is healthy and in tune it shouldn't be needed.

There should have been a link to photos of the tractor at PhotoPoint. I will try again.
